Google has recently unveiled its Pixel 9 series at the Made by Google keynote event, showcasing a range of AI-related advancements that promise to revolutionize user experience. Among these innovations is Gemini Live, an exclusive feature for the new Pixel phones that offers conversational assistance with a focus on voice input. This marks the first time Google fans and Pixel users will get to try out what the company showcased as Project Astra a few months ago at Google I/O.

Project Astra is a version of Google Glass that many wished to see and use, currently in development at Google DeepMind. The recorded demo at I/O showed the AI picking up on visual cues from a video stream, understanding what the user is pointing to, and delivering helpful results via audio, much like Gemini Live.

Google’s senior VP for Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh, closed the presentation with a glimpse into the future of Gemini, tying it to Project Astra. He stated, “One of the first places you’ll see Project Astra come to life is right in Gemini Live.”

In addition to being available on Pixel phones, Gemini Live is also accessible through the latest Pixel Buds, activated by the keywords “Let’s talk live.” This feature aims to provide a seamless experience resembling the Gemini Live experience on a Pixel phone, without needing to pull the phone out. In the near future, Google plans to enhance Gemini Live to integrate with other apps on users’ devices, particularly those developed by the company, further enhancing the seamless experience Gemini aims to deliver on the latest generation of Pixel phones.

However, the company did not define specific timelines and cautioned that the product demos shown on stage were for “aspirational purposes,” with the results depicted being purely illustrative. Thus, there will still be some waiting and watching before users can enjoy the conveniences of a real-time AI companion like Project Astra.
